Two days after his 15th birthday, police said Grant killed McLaughlin, a 14-year-old seventh-grade student at Maranacook Middle School. McLaughlin was found dead Monday, July 18, by her mother at the family home on Blackberry Road in Mount Vernon. The family car went missing from the driveway and was later found abandoned in the nearby town of Wayne. Grant was arrested and charged over the weekend. McLaughlin was buried after a service on Sunday, July 24. In her obituary, she was described as a “kind, loving, very attentive, generous, strong person who loved her family and friends”. the attorney general asked Grant to undergo a diagnostic evaluation.
