Jim Curtis is someone who isn’t afraid to make a change.

“I’ve worked in finance, I’ve had careers in media, I’ve had careers as a coach, as a business owner, as an author, as a solo londonbusinessblog.com, and as a Chief Revenue Officer at a large corporation,” he said.

While turning can be scary, Curtis says everything he’s done so far has been a natural progression because he knew where he wanted to go.

After he wrote, The Stimulati Experience: 9 Skills to Get Beyond Pain, Setbacks and Trauma to Boost Health and Happinesshe ran a wellness spa, Modern Sanctuary, and thought about what to do next.

“I wanted a bigger challenge, and it just so happened that the… Institute for Integrative Nutrition was looking for someone,” he said. “They contacted me, and it turned out it was a really good match. So I decided to take the plunge.”

Now Jim Curtis is the company’s chief revenue officer and head of the brand. He sat down with Jessica Abu to talk about what it means to be a health coach and how to determine if this career path is right for you.

Jessica Abo: Tell us about the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN).

Jim Curtis:
It is really a very reputable school that has been teaching people to live better lives for a long time and cultivates people to create a career in health coaching. The school identified the health coaching career with Joshua Rosenthal about 30 years ago, so it’s been a bit of a New York institution and it’s grown into a global phenomenon. It has 175 countries with students and 155,000 graduates. But it has also become a place where people can go for a lot of information, welfare topics and other education.

IIN is really for those people who want to change their life in some way or their career. So we get a lot of people who come to us who experience something negative in their lives. They don’t feel good physically or mentally, they don’t like their job, they have diabetes, they have a physical condition or they just don’t feel good about their body, they don’t feel good in their body, or they suffer from stress. So IIN is really for those people who want to make a change in their life or their career because we teach so many different modalities in a learning management system with behavior change from 95 of the most respected people in the world when it comes to these subjects so that a student can easily learning how to change his life for the better through diet and also become a health coach, which will allow him to start a brand new career that is extremely rewarding.

For those interested in following this path, what can you tell us about the curriculum and how it is structured?

Curtis:
The reason we have set up the curriculum the way it is is because it leads you into a learning path that empowers you to change your behavior and make real changes. So it starts with an explanation of the primary foods. So these are all the things that you ingest, that nourish you, that are not food on your plate. It is relationships, spirituality, connection with other people and your career. Secondary food is really the food on your plate and we learn 144 different nutritional theories. So we do this over a six or 12 month program and at the end of it you are ready to go out and either live your life better and take care of the health of other people around you and your family, your friends or your community. change , become a health coach and start coaching people as a career because we also teach coaching skills and business skills, or many of the people who graduate are going to do so many other things in wellness.

What are some of those things? What are some of those careers that people pursue after graduation?

Curtis:
People often think that the only career you can have after you graduate as a health coach is to be a health coach. And that is certainly one career. So people start coaching other people on how to improve their lives and their health, and often they pick a niche, so you’re a hormone health coach or you’re a health coach who focuses on behavior change by changing the subconscious through hypnosis, or you focus on gut health or many other things. But there are so many other things you can do as a health coach as you start to give credibility to the product you want to make. You could write books, become a content creator, or work for a doctor’s office or wellness center. If you decide to go the route more about creating content or creating products, there are so many successful graduates who have created amazing products such as Purely Elizabeth, Sakara Life, Days Off Candy, and White Tiger. I get so excited when I talk about it.

Finally, Jim, what do you think are the five things someone should keep in mind when considering becoming a health coach?

Curtis:
That’s a really good question and I think it really starts with education. There are many options in terms of where you can actually be trained, and often people start giving advice and coaching people without any formal training. Formal education is more than just understanding nutrition. You start to understand how to coach people, how to be a guide and then the business around it.

So the first thing to consider is where you will be educated, what you want in a school and how you are going to use that qualification.

The second part I think you should consider is a lifestyle. Do you want a lifestyle that gives you the freedom to schedule your own time and work the hours you want to work, but also find and schedule the clients with them, meaning freedom to work on your own time, too? tends to be a bit unclear about when you will be working? Or do you want to be someone who has a more structured job that can be in the office and work 9 to 5? That will really help you determine what type of health coach you want to be.

The third part is: are you enthusiastic about health and wellness? Are you excited to look at the new trends in the world? Are you excited to really dive deep into nutrition? Do you have a real desire and zest for life? Do you get excited about this kind of thing because it’s necessary as a health coach?

Number four would be that you have a desire to help other people. If that gives you purpose, and if that really allows you to feel great and contribute to the world in a positive way by creating a ripple effect of health in the world, then health coaching is definitely for you.

And the fifth is: do you have the energy and excitement to transform yourself? First look within and keep working on yourself, so that you can then radiate what the world really needs in terms of well-being.
