A 9-year-old boy survived an attack Friday that killed three of his family members at Maquoketa Caves State Park Campground, according to the mayor of Cedar Falls. Four people died in what investigators say was a triple homicide in the state park. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation says three members of a Cedar Falls family were found dead in a tent. They have been identified as 42-year-old Tyler Schmidt, 42-year-old Sarah Schmidt and 6-year-old Lula Schmidt. DCI has named 23-year-old Anthony Sherwin of La Vista, Nebraska, as a suspect. Investigators found Sherwin dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was found just west of the park. Arlo, Tyler and Sarah’s 9-year-old son, survived the attack, according to Cedar Falls Mayor Rob Green. He posted that information on his Facebook page Saturday morning. He said the boy is safe. The mayor also said Sarah was an employee at the Cedar Falls Public Library. “The Cedar Falls library will be closed tomorrow because of the staff who loved and worked with Sarah,” Green said in his Facebook post. Green said he knew the family well. “I knew Sarah well, and she and her family often walked here in the Sartori Park neighborhood.” Green added: “Please give some extra grace to Schmidt’s many friends, neighbors and colleagues as we trying to process this terrible tragedy” The service and other information about the commemoration are expected to be announced in the coming days. A GoFundMe has been set up to support the family. Meanwhile, the DCI continues its investigation. Click below to read more news see:

A 9-year-old boy survived an attack Friday that killed three of his family members at Maquoketa Caves State Park Campground, according to the mayor of Cedar Falls.

Four people died in what investigators say was a triple homicide in the state park.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation says three members of a family from Cedar Falls were found dead in a tent. They are identified as 42-year-old Tyler Schmidt, 42-year-old Sarah Schmidt and 6-year-old Lula Schmidt.

The mayor also said Sarah was an employee of the Cedar Falls Public Library.

“The Cedar Falls library will be closed tomorrow because of the staff who loved and worked with Sarah,” Green said in his Facebook post.

Green said he knew the family well.

“Like many of you just hearing the news, I’m devastated,” Green said. “I knew Sarah well, and she and her family regularly walked here in the Sartori Park neighborhood.”

Green added: “Please give some extra grace to the Schmidt’s many friends, neighbors and colleagues as we try to come to terms with this terrible tragedy.”

Information about the service and other commemorations is expected to be announced in the coming days.

A GoFundMe has been set up to support the family.

Meanwhile, the DCI continues its investigation.
