A Purdue University student will be charged with murder after his roommate was murdered at an Indiana campus residence, according to the school’s police chief.

Ji Min “Jimmy” Sha, a junior cybersecurity major and international student from Korea, called 911 around 12:45 a.m. to alert police of the death, Purdue University police chief Lesley Wiete said at a news conference Wednesday morning.

Details of that call have not been released, but authorities said the incident took place in a room on the first floor of McCutcheon Hall.

The Tippecanoe County chief and coroner identified the murdered student as Varun Manish Chheda, a 20-year-old senior from Indianapolis who studied data science.

Chheda died of “multiple sharp traumatic injuries” and the manner of death was a homicide, according to preliminary autopsy results.

The final autopsy findings are pending toxicology, the coroner’s office said.

Wiete said Sha, 22, was taken into custody minutes after the 911 call and transported to the police station for further investigation. According to the chef, he has not yet been booked.

After Chheda’s death, school officials said there was no threat to the community.

Wiete didn’t say a motive or details about possible weapons, but said the 911 call came from the room and only Chheda and Sha were in it at the time.

“I believe this was unprovoked and pointless,” she said, noting that neither roommate was asleep when the incident happened.

When asked why Sha called 911, Wiete said, “He’s the one who called and made us aware of the situation.”

Chheda’s death marked Purdue’s first on-campus murder since January 2014, police said.

Purdue President Mitch Daniels called the news “as tragic an event as we can imagine on our campus and our hearts and thoughts go out to everyone affected by this terrible event.”

Purdu has about 50,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the fall semester, according to its website.

Residence staff and clinicians with the school’s counseling and psychological services provide support to students in need, he said in a statement pronunciation Wednesday morning.

Daniels assured everyone that the campus is a vault. “Compared to cities with Purdue populations (about 60,000 in total), we experience a small proportion of violent and property crime occurring elsewhere,” he said.

“Statistics like this are no comfort on a day like this,” he added. “A death on our campus and with our Purdue family touches each and every one of us deeply.”

Chheda had attended Park Tudor School, Dennis Bisgaard, the school’s interim principal, confirmed.

“The entire Park Tudor community is incredibly saddened by the tragic loss of Varun Chheda, Park Tudor class of 2020, Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time,” he said.

This is a story in development. Come back for updates.
