AFC Wimbledon defender Will Nightingale would be more than happy to see Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki appointed on a full-time basis at the end of the season.

Bowen, who replaced Mark Robinson as manager following the 1-0 home defeat to Cambridge United, has recorded three draws from five games in charge.

But two of the points picked up so far under the former Reading boss have come against sides – Milton Keynes and Wycombe Wanderers – aiming to secure promotion to the Championship this season.

Bowen and Niedzwiecki are both only on contracts until the end of the season.

When asked by the South London Press whether he would like the duo to stay on, Nightingale said: “Both the gaffer and Eddie are very likeable guys.

AFC Wimbledon v MK Dons SkyBet League One, Cherry Red Records Stadium, 09 April 2022

“They have that right balance in terms of seriousness in terms of setting demands on us, but they’re also very encouraging when bringing the best out of us as players.

“They have that right balance, they have a lot of respect, and I believe that they are very, very good managers and coaches.

“If they were to stay on, I would be more than happy because I believe that with the few games that they have been with us, we have been brilliant. We have just been unfortunate in terms of getting the right amount of points.

“I know that is not what people want to hear, but there are lots of encouraging signs.

“We have to stick with it, and whatever happens moving forward, I am a servant to this football club, so I have to look at what I am going to do. But, at the same time, they have both been brilliant since they have come in.

“It wasn’t an easy job for the gaffer and Eddie to come in to – taking on a side that is low in confidence. But that is the key difference, we were low in confidence, but it has shown credit to their character.

“I am loving it at the minute under them. They both have a wealth of experience, and I have full trust in both of them.”

See tomorrow’s South London Press for an in-depth interview with Nightingale about this season, the winless run and his reasoning behind signing a new three-and-a-half-year deal with the club.
