NBC News has reached out to the Jackson County Sheriff for comment.

Medical staff told authorities that despite brain damage from the attack, Palmer was able to talk enough to identify her attacker, Metro News reported.

“The keys to the whole case were with the victim herself and because she was unable to communicate, we had nothing left. Now low and lo, two years later and boom, she’s awake and able to tell us exactly what happened,” Mellinger told Metro News.

“He didn’t argue with us or anything. There was a bit of a surprise, but not quite,” Mellinger told Metro News of the arrest.

Officials said they believed Daniel Palmer allegedly attacked his sister with a machete or an axe.

He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and willful injury.

It was not immediately clear whether Daniel Palmer had engaged a lawyer.
