More than a dozen Democratic members of Congress were arrested Tuesday afternoon by the Capitol police as part of a protest against abortion rights before the Supreme Court.

They wore specially made green bandanas with “Won’t Back Down” and marched from the Capitol to the Court, which has been closed for weeks since shortly after the leak of the draft order nullifying Roe v. Wade.

Within two minutes of their arrival, police began ordering them to “stop and stop”. Instead, they sat in the street and were led away one by one by officers as they chanted, “The people, united, will never be divided.”

The US Capitol Police tweeted: “Protesters begin to block First Street, NE. It’s against the law to block traffic, so officers are going to give us three warnings by default before making any arrests.”

The Capitol Police later said they had arrested a total of 34 people, including 16 members of Congress.

Among those arrested:

  • Assistant Speaker Katherine Clark from Massachusetts
  • Ayanna Pressley from Massachusetts
  • Barbara Lee from California
  • Jackie Speier from California
  • Sara Jacobs from California
  • Ilhan Omar from Minnesota
  • Bonnie Watson Coleman from New Jersey
  • Andy Levin from Michigan
  • Rashida Tlaib from Michigan
  • Jan Schakowsky from Illinois
  • Madeline Dean of Pennsylvania
  • Cori Bush of Missouri
  • Carolyn Maloney from New York
  • Nydia Velazquez from New York
  • Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York
  • Alma Adams from North Carolina
