As you probably already know, workcations are quite simple. In short, you pack your laptop bag, leave for a distant destination and work remotely for a few days, weeks or even months.
So instead of answering your morning emails in a flat in Birmingham, you could be sitting on a beach in Bermuda.
This new trend is a direct by-product of the pandemic. With the rise of remote working, coupled with a growing appetite for international travel, more and more employees are deciding to take multiple breaks per year while saving their annual vacation.

Of course there is a lot to consider before you book a workation. You have to think about the time difference, the internet connection, the cost of living and of course what kind of adventure you are looking for.
So to help you decide, we’ve rounded up the four best places to do it.
For city dwellers: Paris, France
As the saying goes, Paris is always a good idea. Instead of going to the city of love for a long weekend, stay for a month (or two) and really immerse yourself in the French way of life (we imagine coffee and croissants by the Seine every morning).
If you love being part of a bustling uber-cosmopolitan city, you really can’t beat the French capital. After all, there is so much to do here, from an abundance of great museums to the great parks, excellent cocktail bars and high-end restaurants. Moreover, looking at people is off the scale.
Paris is an expensive place to be, but there are hotels that cater specifically to digital nomads like The Student Hotel and Mamashelter Paris East. If you decide to visit, join a coworking space like Cozy Corner or La Cordée Coworking. It’s a great way to meet like-minded individuals and get some insider tips for the city.
Would you like to stay a little longer? Wefox, Europe’s number one digital insurer, is hiring in the city, with open positions for Lead Machine Learning Engineer and Business Analyst (actuarial) both now available. Moreover, you can also check out other open positions at wefox.
Best for Foodies: Austin, Texas
If you want to spend your work eating great food, go to Texas. While Austin may be known for its legendary Tex-Mex, delicious barbecue, and exceptional breakfast tacos, there’s so much more to the capital’s food scene. In recent years, Austin has been at the forefront of modern cuisine, and the city is also home to plenty of great food trucks.
Austin is becoming a tech paradise in its own right. During the pandemic, numerous major tech companies relocated to the Lone Star State to avoid skyrocketing rents and an impossible housing situation in Silicon Valley. As of November 2020, 35 companies had relocated or opened new facilities in the Austin area according to the Austin Chamber of Commerce.
Austin is a great place for a workplace thanks to its extensive remote work community. There are many great coworking spaces and monthly events where digital nomads can meet. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the city and while the cost of living is high, it is in line with local salaries.
Do you want to move here instead? Indeed is currently seeking a number of positions in the city, including a Software Engineer III – Job Seeker role and a Staff Software Engineer position. Plus, you’ll find many more open positions at Indeed here.
For beach lovers: Phuket, Thailand
Can you see yourself swimming in crystal clear water or lounging in a hammock during your lunch break? Then consider working in beautiful Phuket, an island on the southwest coast of Thailand.
It is the best place for a beach holiday thanks to the beautiful weather. Also in the rainy season the sun often shines and the daytime temperature is usually around 35 degrees.
Because the country’s cost of living is so affordable, it tends to be an attractive place for many digital nomads.
When you add in the exceptional Thai food, friendly locals and easy access to the rest of Southeast Asia, it’s not surprising that so many people flock to this area.
Want to spend some time lounging on the beach while coding? Liberty Mutual Insurance has a vacancy for a Remote Senior Software Engineer, which could be a good fit.
For Adventurers: Dublin, Ireland
Do you want to climb mountains in the evening, kayak around small uninhabited islands, dive or sail in Dublin Bay or practice yoga in the park? Then the capital of Ireland might be the perfect place for you.
Dublin isn’t known for great weather, but it’s certainly a great city for adventure seekers. Located on the coast, it has access to a variety of beach and water sports activities and is right next to mountainous Co Wicklow, known as ‘the garden of Ireland’. It is the perfect place to go mountain biking, hiking or just exploring at the weekend.
The city is now one of the largest tech hubs in Europe. Tech giants such as Airbnb, LinkedIn and Deloitte all have offices in the city. There are also good transport links and plenty of coworking spaces such as WeWork and Huckletree. You are also assured of good Wi-Fi almost everywhere in the city.
Dublin is certainly not cheap. However, if you live like a local, take public transport and don’t spend all your evenings in the pub, you can make it work.
If you’re considering making a more permanent move, Zurich Insurance has a range of cloud roles to offer, including Cloud Engineer (FinOps) – Cloud Business Office and Cloud Platform Engineer – or view all roles at Zurich.
