Tech huge Apple has about 100 contract-based recruiters in the past week in an effort to slow recruitment and spending, media reports say.

The recruiters, who are responsible for hiring new employees at the company, were told the layoffs reflect changes in Apple’s business needs. Bloombergreported CNBC.

While the move is unusual for the California-based tech giant, Apple isn’t the only company slowing down hiring, according to the report.

Other tech giants, including MicrosoftAmazon, meta, Teslaand Oracle, have all slowed down or cut hiring in some departments in recent months as they grapple with inflation and tighten their belts in anticipation of a potential economic downturn.

“We see inflation in our cost structure,” CEO Tim Cook said last month.

“We see it in things like logistics and wages and certain silicon components. And we’re still hiring, but we’re doing it on purpose,” Cook added.

Not all of the company’s contractors have been laid off, according to the report, and Apple is still keeping its full-time recruiters on board, according to the report. The dismissed contractors will receive benefits and pay for another two weeks.
