asteroid in love (also known as Koisuru Asuteroido) is one of the anime genre “Slice of life” released in 2020. A manga adaptation, the series is licensed by Funimation and crunchy rolls† The anime, licensed by these two giant anime distributors, had the chance to attract viewers from all over the world. Asteroid in Love was created by Doga Koba, an established Japanese animation studio. We know the studio from well-known anime such as Osamake and The Helpful Fox Senko-san. The anime originally aired on AT-X, Tokyo MX, SUN, KBS, TVA, BS11 on January 3, 2020. The details of the second season of the series, whose last episode, called Connected Cosmos, was published on March 27, 2020, are curious. That’s how the anime has been renewed for a second season?

What was the asteroid in love about?

As a little girl, Mira Kinohata meets a boy named Ao in the camp. Looking up at the starry sky, Mira discovers that there is a star with the same name as herself, but no star named Ao. The two promise each other that one day they will discover asteroids together and find a star that Ao can name. A few years later, Mira enrolls in Hoshizaki High School and decides to join the astronomy club to fulfill her promise.

However, she learns that her astronomy club will be merged with the geological research community. When she tells Ao Manaka about the situation in the clubroom, it comes as an even bigger shock to discover that Ao is a girl.

Will there be a second season of Asteroid in Love?

From August 22, 2021 Crunchyroll of Funimation hasn’t been updated yet the series for a second season† However, this is a situation we are used to in anime. Asteroid in Love was one of the anime released to support the sales of the manga. There are a few factors that we can judge whether the anime will get a second season or not.

Manga status of the anime

Asteroid in Love is a manga adaptation anime. Written and illustrated by manga writer Quro, the manga made its debut in January 2017. The good news is that the manga is still ongoing. In total, four volumes have been released so far.

Part 1 March 27, 2018
Part 2 May 27, 2019
Part 3 February 27, 2020
Part 4 May 27, 2021

Every year a volume is released for the manga series, and in 2022 we can expect a new volume. The manga doesn’t have an English publisher yet, though, so it’s a little hard to follow. With the volume released in May 2021, unused material is the same as the source material used in the anime’s first season. Maybe we haven’t seen a new season until now because there wasn’t enough source material for a new season. The first anime season has been adapted from the first two parts of the manga and the creators now have two more parts available for a second season.

The popularity of the anime

For an anime to have a new season, the adequacy of the source material is important. Otherwise, it will not be possible to see a new season for an anime adapted from the manga. But there is another important factor, which is popularity. Since anime’s are for-profit productions, they have a number of financial goals and in order to achieve these goals, they need to be successful in disc sales or online viewing platforms. Although Koisuru Asuteroido’s manga is very popular in Japan, unfortunately we can’t say the same about the anime series.

miracle egg priority season 2

The disc sales of the anime took place in the winter season of 2020. The series, which sold a total of 3 volume discs, sold an average of 1464 copies. When this sales figure is evaluated, the overall target of animes is well below the 4000 units accepted. We know that disc sales have declined in recent years due to the change of habits. However, we cannot say that anime has strong popularity on other platforms.

Anime is ranked in 2024 according to Myanimelist data. (Popularity ranking.) On the other hand, we don’t see a strong search volume in Google searches. 42.4k people follow the Twitter account of the series. The popularity in Japan holds up well compared to global popularity, but doesn’t seem strong enough to get a second season.

When is the second season release date?

Despite all this, we witnessed many animes getting a chance for a second season despite their low popularity. If there’s a surprise extension, we can get the new season of the anime in 2022† But keep in mind that this is just speculation and highly unlikely. We hope the manga series finds a UK publisher soon, and fans can follow the series’ sequel here.

What is the studio working on?

It is not yet known if the studio is working for Asteroid in Love Season 2, there is no confirmation on this subject, but approved work has surfaced.
