Audrey is an only child raised in Kentucky by her father, who works two jobs to support the family, and her mother, Julie, who is a homemaker.
Audrey still attends primary school and is interested in many things such as playing video games, traveling and sports, but she can’t exercise much and wouldn’t get tired as it could worsen her condition. She became interested in dancing at a very young age – after her mother brought her along to her first Zumba class, she found that her daughter was very passionate about it – Audrey has been taking Zumba classes for five years. She spends most of her free time reading books – her favorites are romantic books like Nicholas Sparks’s, including “Dear John” and “The Notebook.”

Audrey’s father launched the YouTube channel “Audrey Nethery” on August 20, 2013 and part of the bio section reads: ‘This channel is dedicated to my daughter Audrey who has a rare bone marrow syndrome called Diamond Blackfan Anemia (www.dbafoundation.org) . People with DBA don’t make enough red blood cells to survive.’
There are currently over a million people subscribed to the channel and it has over 327 million views of all the videos uploaded to it. Audrey dances and sings in most videos, and two of the most popular on the channel are “Audrey at the International Zumba Convention in Orlando!!” which has been seen more than 85 million times since August 19, 2015, and “Life’s Beautiful- Audrey Nethery Ft. Steven Battey and Kayla C.” which has been viewed more than 58 million times since December 13, 2016 – because of how mean people can be in the comments, Audrey’s father has turned off comments.
The channel was created not just to show people what the disease looks like, but to raise money for critical research and perhaps finding the cure for this disease. Audrey also has an Instagram account run by her father, which today has nearly 550,000 followers – the account is also used to raise awareness about the disease.
Disease
Diamond Blackfan Anemia is a congenital erythroid aplasia, which can be noticed in the early stages of life. It causes the person to not have enough red blood cells, and failure to treat them would lead to certain death.
In about a quarter of cases, the disease is inherited from parents and grandparents, while in about half of cases it is related to abnormal ribosomal protein genes.
To diagnose the disease, a blood count is done as well as a bone marrow biopsy – the disease is usually diagnosed when the person is not older than two years.
There are multiple ways to treat Diamond Blackfan anemia, but it cannot be cured. Corticosteroids are the main treatment and about 82 percent of people respond positively to this therapy, but with many side effects.
Blood transfusions are often used to treat severe cases of the disease, and bone marrow transplantation is the third mode of treatment that can cure the hematologic aspects of the disease. Many studies are currently being conducted and many charitable events are being organized around the world to raise money for this research.

Audrey is a very active girl who loves to dance as seen in numerous videos uploaded on YouTube.
She is a huge lover of stuffed animals and her parents often buy her new ones. Audrey likes to be outdoors, especially in the woods, so her parents occasionally take her to national parks and zoos – she is a lover of animalsbut does not have a pet because the family does not have enough free time to take good care of it.
In her spare time she enjoys listening to music, and her favorite bands are The Lumineers and The Paper Kites, while two of her favorite songs are “Ho Hey” and “Submarines”.
