When it comes to finding a device to read your ebooks, you have a few options to choose from. You can always buy a tablet or use your smartphone, but those devices are multifunctional and can be used for a lot of things, like surfing the web or doom scrolling on Twitter. If you’re looking for something to strictly read books, e-readers, while niche, are designed to store all your books in a virtual library with limited functionality.
Amazon, one of the pioneers of the e-reader, has dominated the space for years with its Kindle lineup, which consists of several unique models with their own advantages and disadvantages.
Below we’ve listed each model currently on sale. Sometimes there is no deal for one of the products, so we have mentioned the most recent sale price in those cases. Also keep in mind that Amazon Prime Day – Amazon’s annual, two-day sales event – takes place on July 12 and 13. So while newer models like the 2021 Kindle Paperwhite will only be available at full price, we can expect heavy discounts on a number of models starting July 21, when Amazon launches its early Prime Day sales.
The 10th generation Kindle is Amazon’s most affordable e-reader and as such usually retails for $89.99. Released in 2019, the base Kindle includes a front light, 8GB of storage, and comes with or without ad support. Despite having the same 167 ppi resolution as its predecessors, the latest model has a slightly higher contrast than previous models.
The 10th Gen Kindle normally starts at $89.99 with ads, but is currently available on Amazon† Targetand Best Buy for $59.99. If you want the model without ads, it is now available on Amazon for $74.99, a healthy $35 off the standard retail price. The last retailer is also sell the ad-supported e-reader in black or white with a power adapter and one of four cloth covers for $90.97, a $49 discount.
If you want to buy more than one e-reader, Best Buy and Target are also offering $20 off a pair of Kindles. Keep in mind, though, that if you buy either Kindle model from Amazon, you’ll also receive three months of Kindle Unlimited at no additional cost.
The Kindle and Oasis entry-level models weren’t the only ones to get a makeover in 2019. Amazon also released the Kindle Kids, which comes with a handful of accessories and offers age-appropriate content for younger readers who prefer digital books for $109.99 ($20 more than the basic Kindle at standard MSRP).
The Kindle Kids edition consists of four items: the device, a case, a two-year extended replacement warranty (in the event the device breaks), and one year of Amazon Kids Plus service. The latter is the device’s biggest selling point, aside from the kid-friendly patterns, as it allows parents to give their kids access to a digital library of kid-friendly books like Percy Jackson and the hobbit without extra costs.
In terms of deals, we recently saw the Kindle Kids drop to $59.99, which is just $5 less than the current price at Amazon and Best Buy† Both retailers also offer a $20 discount when you buy two, though Amazon requires you to enter a promo code 2PACK at checkout to take advantage of the deal.
Amazon’s latest Kindle Paperwhite is the 11th-generation model, which comes with USB-C support, longer battery life and a larger 6.8-inch screen. However, considering how recently the new e-reader was launched, we haven’t seen many high discounts yet. Fortunately, you can still buy the last-generation model, which is often available for much less than the standard retail price.
The 2021 Kindle Paperwhite is available in three main configurations: a 8 GB model with ads for $139.99a 8 GB model with no ads for $159.99and a 32 GB, ad-free Signature Edition for $189.99† The latter is identical to the standard Paperwhite, except it also features Qi wireless charging and a sensor that automatically adjusts the backlighting when needed. Amazon also has a Kindle Paperwhite Kids Edition for $159.99, which comes with a kid-friendly cover, a two-year extended replacement warranty, and a one-year Amazon Kids Plus, just like the aforementioned Kindle Kids. All 2021 models are also similar to the 2018 model in that they have a waterproof design and support for Audible audiobooks.
While we recently saw the ad-supported Kindle Paperwhite drop to $104.99 for Mother’s Day, it’s currently only available on Amazon† Best Buyand Target starting at $139.99, the full retail price. However, if you buy the e-reader from Amazon, you also get three months of Kindle Unlimited at no additional cost.
Amazon is also offering the Paperwhite 2021 as part of a bundle that includes a power adapter and either a cloth cover for $189.97 or a leather case for $179.97, both of which are $20 off. The 32GB, ad-free Signature Edition is for sale at Amazon for $249.97 ($20 off) as part of a discounted bundle, which also includes a “cork” cover and wireless charging pad.
Unfortunately, if you’re looking for the Kindle Paperwhite Kids Edition, it’s only available from Amazon and Best Buy now for $159.99, the standard retail price, or as a two-pack for about $300. As with Amazon’s other Kindles, you’ll need to use a promo code 2PACK at Amazon to apply the $20 discount to a pair.
While there are currently no significant deals on the 2021 Kindle Paperwhite — other than the $20 discount on a pair and the small break on the various bundles — retailers like Amazon and Best Buy often drop the price of the last-generation model to $89. .99 during major shopping holidays and major sales events. Unfortunately, however, the 2018 e-reader is only available from Amazon in the 8 GB, ad-supported configuration for $109.99 ($20 discount) or in the 32GB configuration for $129.99 ($30 off).
The Kindle Oasis is the most expensive of the lineup, starting at $250. The device comes in two storage configurations, 8GB or 32GB, and like the other models, you can get it with or without ads on the lock screen.
The Kindle Oasis 2019 is very similar to the previous model. It retains its waterproof, 7-inch, 300ppi E Ink display and supports Audible audiobooks via Bluetooth. However, unlike previous models, it can adjust the color temperature to match a yellow-tinted display, making it easier to read at night.
In the past, we’ve seen the 8GB Kindle Oasis drop to just $174.99, which is the lowest it’s ever been for that configuration to date. While there are currently no deals for just the Oasis itself, configurations start at $249.99 at Amazon and include three free months of Kindle Unlimited. The 8 GB, ad-supported Oasis costs $249.99 and the one without ads is $269.99† If you need more storage space, you can use the 32 GB version costs $279.99 with ads or $299.99 without† Best Buy also sells the ad-supported base model for $249.99, and offering a $20 discount when you buy two. Amazon is currently running the same promotion, offering $20 off a pair with promo code 2PACK†
If you’re looking for a deal, the Kindle Oasis Essentials bundle is currently on sale in select configurations at Amazon for $30 off the regular list price. At this point, you can either use the 8 GB, ad-supported configuration for only $279.97 or the 32GB variant for $309.97both of which come with a power adapter and a cloth or leather cover.
