Brand new animalsimply known as BNA, is an action and fantasy anime series that was first published in 2020. The anime, made by Japanese animation studio Studio trigger, has completed its first season. We also know the studio from the beloved anime series Little Witch Academia† The series, also broadcast by Netflix, met the public on April 8, 2020 with the episode “Runaway Raccoon”. After airing 12 episodes, it completed its first season with the episode “Anima-City”. Fans are wondering about the season 2 renewal status of the series, whether it will be a new season and other details. The anime series, directed by Yoh Yoshinari, is from the pen of Kazuki Nakashima. The script, specially prepared for the anime, was later turned into a manga and a light novel. Unless we’re used to it, it won’t get the anime script of manga or light novel. On the other hand, the series BNA was one of the best anime series to be released on Netflix in 2020.
What is the storyline of the anime: BNA?
The story is set in the 21st century. It is based on a period when anthropomorphic (like human) animals never seen before in the world, called Beastmen, came to light. Michiru Kagemori, an ordinary high school student, suddenly turns into a tanuki Beastman one day. A high school student who has trouble with monster hunters travels to the city of Anima.
The city of Anima is a place where creatures like her can live in peace. Michiru, who meets the wolf Beastman named Shirou Ogami, wants to reveal the secret of this transformation. The two young people begin to investigate the mystery behind this sudden event and even the deep secrets behind the city’s genesis.
Will there be a second season of BNA?
From December 1, 2021† Netflix or a company related to the anime hasn’t yet renewed the series for a second season† However, there is no cancellation yet. It was one of the most successful series of 2020 on Netflix. A second season is still expected.
It is unknown if the studio is currently working on a sequel. There is no information that they have published on this topic yet. While some people really liked the series, everything is about finance. It seems there aren’t many open topics about the script at this point. If the script is expanded, there may be a follow-up light for the series, but the priority is not on the screenplay, but on the financial reasons. For this reason, eyes are on a statement that could come from Netflix.
Disc sales and popularity of BNA
Disc sales are important to anime, although not as important as they used to be with the rise of exclusive distributors and online streamers in recent years; it’s still good data to see the popularity in Japan. In general, the anime is expected to sell on average € 4,000 copies to get confirmation of the new season. BNA’s disc sales, however, remained well below this target. BNA, which sold 436 discs averaged 80th out of 109 anime that went on sale during the same period. While it has become popular worldwide on Netflix, its disc sales show that anime is highly underrated in Japan. The fact that only 37k people follow the animes Twitter page in Japan confirms the result we have achieved with the sale of discs. On the other hand, the anime was in 621st place myanimelist based on popularity and this ranking seems risky when evaluated along with disc sales.
2nd season chance of a brand new animal
Popularity on Mynanimelist
Popularity on social media
Popularity on Google searches
Above average ratings (7.40 on MA, 7.2 on IMDb)
No source material needed as original anime series
Major distributor like Netflix
No success in disc sales
Low popularity in Japan
Not a bestselling manga series
Only one season
Since anime is not a manga adaptation, source material adequacy will not be an issue for a new season. In this case, the most critical dates to see a new season are popularity. The fact that there has been no cancellation announcement from Netflix so far increases the chances of seeing the second season of the series. Considering it takes a year to prepare an average anime series, we think we could see a possible second season of the series sometime in 2022†
