oris Johnson is “absolutely focused on the job at hand” amid the partygate probe, the Northern Ireland Secretary has said.
Brandon Lewis gave his backing to the Prime Minister when he sat down to give an interview to Sky News’ Trevor Phillips on Sunday.
Mr Johnson has received his questionnaire from police investigating allegations of lockdown-breaching parties in No 10, Downing Street said on Friday.
But the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland maintained the PM remains focused on the Ukraine crisis and the cost of energy, not the Met’s investigation into the alleged breaches.
He said: “The investigation is a matter for the police, I’m not going to put time frames on them, they’ve got to be able to do their job independently, autonomously and see that through.
“I have to say in the dealings I’ve had with the Prime Minister. He is absolutely focused on the job in hand, about what he’s doing for the British people.”
Elsewhere in the interview, the Cabinet minister said Mr Johnson will “fight” and win the next election despite the partygate investigation.
He told Sky’s Trevor Phillips On Sunday: “He has my absolute 100%-plus loyalty. I think this a Prime Minister is doing things for our country, he’s got the big decisions right. I think he will fight and he will win as a result of the next general election.”
This week Mr Johnson will escape London as he said he “gets on with the job” with a visit to Scotland.
He said: “I’m getting out of London this week and taking a simple message with me – this Government is getting on with the job of uniting and levelling up the country.
“Access to good healthcare, a good education, skilled work, reliable transport – none of this should depend on where you live. We’re changing the rules of the game to put fairness back at the heart of the system and focusing on the priorities that really matter to people.
“This is our mission and we’re getting on with delivering it.”
