dele scooped the first award of the nights at the Brit Awards 2022 taking Song of the Year Easy On Me.
Adele and Sheeran lead the nominations in tonight’s awards along with Little Simz and Dave with them all having four nods apiece, while singer-songwriter Sam Fender, Central Cee and producer David Guetta are up for three awards each.
Taking to the stage to take the award, she said: “First of all I didn’t know that many songs were nominated for song of the year. I can’t believe that a piano ballad won up against that many bangers.
“But thank you so much. It is always a pleasure to be here. I always love coming home and the Brits is such a big part of my career since way back when I was a little foetus.”
Host Mo Gilligan started the show with a sketch in which he attempted to plan a dramatic entrance, but is thwarted by the show’s policies on carbon emissions.
He later described the venue as “The Mo-2 Arena”.
Ed Sheeran then delivered a rendition of his hit Bad Habits with metal rockers Bring Me The Horizon accompanied by dancers dressed in punk outfits.
Olivia Rodrigo took home the second award for International Song of the Year with Good 4 U.
The 18-year-old American singer said: “Last year at the Brits was my first performance ever so to get this award tonight is so surreal. Thank you so much.”
Last week, Adele confirmed she will perform during the awards ceremony.
It comes after she postponed her Las Vegas Caesars Palace residency at short notice, with Grammy-winning country music star Keith Urban stepping in to replace her.
Dua Lipa scooped the third award for Best Pop/RnB artist. It is the British popstar’s sixth BRIT award.
The fourth award, for best Alternative/Rock act, went to singer-songwriter Sam Fender.
Accepting the award from Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood, he said: “Thanks to the fans. You guys are the best – that’s why we’re here.”
Fender, from North Shields, thanked his fans in the North East and his manager.
Becky Hill took home the award for Best Dance Act, her first ever BRIT Award. In a tearful speech, she said: “It’s been sixteen years since they’ve had a dance category and I’m honoured to win this award tonight”.
The show will feature an all-British line-up of live performances from the likes of Dave, Holly Humberstone, Liam Gallagher and Little Simz.
Nominations for the Brit Awards this year feature the most women in more than a decade, with 18 female artists or all-women groups receiving nods.
The Brits academy faced pressure to do away with its male and female-specific awards this year and has scrapped gendered categories, introducing gender-neutral gongs in their place.
Organisers said they wanted to make the music industry’s showpiece event “as inclusive as possible “.
The shortlist has the most female nominees in more than a decade.
Eighteen female artists or all-women groups have been nominated, just behind the 22 given the nod in 2010.
Chairman Tom March said it was “the right time to celebrate the achievements of artists for the music that they create and the work that they do irrespective of gender.”
It comes after other ceremonies decided to remove gender classifications including the San Sebastián Film Festival which awarded a gender neutral leading performer award with Jessica Chastain and Flora Ofelia Hofmann Lindahl declared joint winners.
