A handwritten letter fromwas delivered to the White House Monday morning, according to the Griner family, who have provided excerpts to reporters. In her letter, the imprisoned WNBA star begged the president not to forget her, saying her already deep appreciation for Independence Day has taken on new meaning this year.
“I’m afraid I’ll be here forever,” Griner wrote, who has been detained in Russia since mid-February. “On July 4, our family normally honors the service of those who fought for our freedom, including my father who is a Vietnam War veteran.

The White House said on Tuesday that bringing Griner home is a “priority” and said it “coordinates closely” with a special presidential envoy for hostage cases.
“You saw the work his administration did to bring Trevor Reed home. That’s the same work, same focus that we’ve done and behind bringing Trevor Reed home, we’re going to do the same with Brittney Griner and others,” That said White House press officer Karine Jean-Pierre.
Griner noted in the letter that she voted for Mr Biden in 2020, the first time she voted. “I believe in you. I still have so much good to do with my freedom that you can help me recover,” she wrote.
