A handwritten letter from Brittney Griner was delivered to the White House Monday morning, according to the Griner family, who have provided excerpts to reporters. In her letter, the imprisoned WNBA star begged the president not to forget her, saying her already deep appreciation for Independence Day has taken on new meaning this year.

“I’m afraid I’ll be here forever,” Griner wrote, who has been detained in Russia since mid-February. “On July 4, our family normally honors the service of those who fought for our freedom, including my father who is a Vietnam War veteran.

Griner, whose process started last weekused to be arrested at a Moscow airport in February after Russia claimed she had cannabis oil in her luggage. A Russian judge ordered Griner, the Phoenix Mercury center that played in Russia during the WNBA season, to remain in custody for the duration of the trial.

The US has said Griner will be… wrongly detained

The White House said on Tuesday that bringing Griner home is a “priority” and said it “coordinates closely” with a special presidential envoy for hostage cases.

“You saw the work his administration did to bring Trevor Reed home. That’s the same work, same focus that we’ve done and behind bringing Trevor Reed home, we’re going to do the same with Brittney Griner and others,” That said White House press officer Karine Jean-Pierre.

Griner noted in the letter that she voted for Mr Biden in 2020, the first time she voted. “I believe in you. I still have so much good to do with my freedom that you can help me recover,” she wrote.

While some supporters support a prisoner swap, Griner’s detention and trial are reaching an all-time low in US-Russia relations amid the war in Ukraine

“We believe that the Russian Federation is improperly detaining Brittney Griner. President Biden has been clear about the need to see all US citizens held hostage or improperly held abroad, including Brittney Griner, released. continues to work aggressively — using whatever means available — to bring her home,” National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said in a statement Monday. “The president’s team is in regular contact with the family of Brittney and we will continue to work to support her family.”

Griner’s wife, Cherelleand family had no further comment on the letter.
