A California high school soccer coach was injured on Tuesday after ending a fight during a campus shooting, authorities said.

Vallejo police responded to the shooting in front of Vallejo High School about 3:45 p.m., a statement from the department said. The shooting was preceded by a fight between some students and “some unknown men”. Police say the fight was interrupted by a school employee.

“Some of the subjects involved fled the area in a dark-colored sedan while firing back at the remaining group. The staff member was hit by at least one bullet and suffered non-life-threatening injuries,” police said.

Police have not released the identity of the staff member who was shot. However, NBC Bay Area reported that there was an outpouring of concern from friends and students who said the person who was shot was football defense coordinator Joe Pastrana, known as “Coach Joe.”

Pastrana and his relatives were not immediately reachable on Wednesday.

Vallejo is about 30 miles north of Oakland.

The Times Herald, of Vallejo, reported that Pastrana was shot in the hip. His condition was stable, the newspaper reports.

The shooting took place, police said, as the campus was still bustling with activity, including a college scholarship and three classes in session. About 200 student athletes were also on campus, police said.

The school was locked after the shooting, police said

Vallejo Police Chief Shawny Williams called the shooting “pointless.”

“This is a senseless act of violence perpetrated by some individuals who place no value on human life,” Williams said. “Enough is enough. It’s a sad day that someone is shot in front of our children at school where they should feel safe.”

The motive for the shooting is unknown, police said.

The school would remain open Wednesday, police said. The campus would provide mental health providers for students who need help, and there would be more security officers and more police presence, they said.

Police representatives were not immediately reached on Wednesday for additional comment.

Police do not suspect those who fled in the dark-colored sedan were students, according to NBC Bay Area.

Head football coach Mike Wilson told the Times-Herald that the team “took the news very hard”.
