An Africa-focused cultural and heritage institution, The Africa Centre, was due to open its doors yesterday.

The centre said it is consolidating its position as a home away from home for the African diaspora.

Opening across four new floors, the space will house a contemporary pan-African concept restaurant called Tatale, a lounge bar, interactive education spaces, a business suite, and a multitude of exhibition and event locations.

Celebrating its new home, at 66 Great Suffolk Street in Southwark, The Africa Centre will house a series of events that shine a light on evolving African culture, history and diaspora, which it has been doing since 1964.

Oba Nsugbe, chairman of the board of The Africa Centre, said: “With time, our mission and purpose have grown and transformed to not only represent the first generation of Africans, but also the second and third generation of Africans and Afro Caribbeans.”

The space intends to celebrate the stories, people and cultures of the African continent by creating a safe space for conversations and activities that contribute towards positive narratives around Africa.

An unveiling was due to take place yesterday, with public events and celebrations taking place from June 10-12.
