Jason Pearce is hoping to stay at Charlton Athletic and feels his performances this season have merited a contract extension.

The 34-year-old Addicks captain signed a 12-month deal last summer and was told by then manager Nigel Adkins that he would be a back-up to other centre-back options.

But Pearce has made 26 appearances this season, the latest in last night’s 2-0 win at Cambridge United. Both Ryan Inniss and Sam Lavelle have had extended spells on the sidelines due to injury.

“There might be doubters out there but I still know I’ve got a lot to give,” Pearce told Charlton TV. “Whether that is a back-up role at times, because obviously I’m getting older, I’m an experienced player and I feel I’d be good to have around the place.

“You’re always trying to prove people wrong. I feel I’ve done that with the performances I’ve given this season. I feel I could’ve played more as well. I feel like I’ve been unlucky to lose my place at times, but that’s football. You have to go and show the right attitude on the training pitch and show your disappointment on the training pitch, work as hard as you can.

Charlton Athletic v Sunderland SkyBet League One, The Valley, 05 March 2022

“I’m pleased I’ve played the games I have but disappointed I haven’t played more.”

When Charlton announced Pearce had re-signed they added the agreement “includes the opportunity of a future coaching role”.

“I’m at a crossroads now, if I’m honest,” said Pearce. “I feel I could carry on playing for another two seasons, if not more. I’ve kept myself fit. But I’m doing a bit of coaching and I’m enjoying that and I want to give back to the younger players and help them as well.

“I feel I’ve got a really good affiliation with the club. At the moment there have been preliminary talks but I’ve had nothing firm, so I’ll have to keep my options open.

“I’d love to stay at the club but I’m not too sure what the club are thinking.”
