A city worker in Buffalo, New York, was fatally injured Wednesday as he helped clear a record snowfall.

City workers had been working around the clock this week after the Buffalo area was hit by a storm that dropped more than six feet of snow in some areas before the tragedy.

The worker was fatally struck at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday in South Buffalo’s McKinley Parkway area by a loader that dumped a load of snow backwards into a dump truck, Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said during a news conference Wednesday.

The employee was not identified, pending a family report, but Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown described the victim as “a very experienced member of our city team, a very experienced member of our city family, with decades of field experience in these types of situations.” . ”

He said the city is “heartbroken” and an investigation is underway by the Buffalo Police Department’s Accident Investigation Unit into exactly what happened.

The mayor added that the driver who hit the victim is “in shock” and is cooperating with the investigation.

Brown said the vehicle involved in the accident was a third-party contractor the city brought in to assist with snow removal. The police will also carry out checks on the vehicles involved.

Brown noted that 180 pieces of heavy equipment were active Wednesday hauling snow from South Buffalo and that city workers were working long shifts, many working with little sleep to clear roads.

He announced a 48-hour suspension for snow removal operations from Wednesday evening.

“We know there is a lot of grief among the staff right now. We know people have been working 4-6pm shifts and getting very little sleep, so tonight at 5pm we will suspend further removal operations for 48 hours,” Brown said.
