While the author said in a 2017 FAQ that despite the editor’s disagreement, the title of the third and final book would remain the Doors of Stone due to popular consensus. But later he convinced the editor of this title.
The first two books:
The name of the first two books is The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man’s Fear. One was released in 2007 and the second was released in 2011, exactly 10 years earlier from today. The fantasy novel set in a fantasy world focuses on the territory of Temerant. The story revolves around a character named Kvothe.

There were rumors that Patrick Rothfuss is due to release the final book of his Kingkiller trilogy in July 2021. This rumor was supported by an Amazon product entry. That product entry was from Doors of Stone and was marked by the July 2021 release date. And if you’re reading this article, you know the product entry was incorrect. Therefore, the whole leak is a false rumor.

Many people have deduced that the reason why Amazon stone door product entry had a false release date. They claim the reason behind this is that Amazon requires that a product release date be stated before it can make a valid entry. However, we could only speculate. And this made all the fans who have been waiting for Doors of Stone for over a decade very sad.

The book picks up where it left off in the life of The Wise Man’s Fear-Kvothe. Apparently the length of this latest novel will be relatively shorter than the previous ones, especially The Wise Man’s Fear.

As he said, a new magical adventure could begin and this time one of the key locations of his trilogy – the university could be less important in the latter. The Doors of Stone tells the life story of Kvothe. It picks up where the wise man’s fear left off. And now he is actively trying to revise the content of his story (namely the last book, The Doors of Stone) to make sure the third and final book is “good”.
In January 2017, while answering an FAQ, he confirmed that his editor was not fond of the title of the third book. But despite his editor’s disapproval, he chose to name his third book: “The doors of stone” simply because, by ‘popular consensus’ (i.e. Rothfuss referring to the book as such in interviews), the… de facto title; Rothfuss added that the editor was now “easy” with the title.
Rothfuss said that The doors of stone will most likely be no longer than The Wise Man’s Fear and suspect it may even be a little shorter.
