Authorities identified the three victims killed Sunday in an Indiana mall, their deranged killer and the hero bystander who shot him — and have likely saved countless others from death.

An Indianapolis man and woman identified as Pedro Pineda, 56, and Rosa Mirian Rivera de Pineda, 37, as well as Victor Gomez, 30, were fatally injured when Jonathan Sapirman opened fire on shoppers in the Greenwood Park Mall shortly before 6pm: 00 hours. This was announced by the police and the local coroner on Monday.

Sapirman, 20, was also killed when he was shot by a legally armed man who was shopping at the mall with his girlfriend at the time, Greenwood Police Chief James Ison said at a news conference.

That shopper, 22-year-old Elishsha Dicken, from Seymour, shot and killed Sapirman with a handgun two minutes after the shooting began.

He was praised for his heroic efforts during the media briefing.

“We are very grateful to a young 22-year-old man who has stopped this act of violence,” said Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers. “This young man, Greenwood’s Good Samaritan, acted within seconds, stopped the gunman and saved countless lives.”

Sapirman, who quit his warehouse job and was evicted from his home, entered the mall shortly before 5 p.m. and went straight to a bathroom near the food court where he spent over an hour preparing for the shooting. Ison said.

An hour and two minutes later, he left the bathroom and immediately began firing a rifle at people in the food court — hitting Gomez first, then the Pinedas.

The gunman also shot a 22-year-old woman in the leg. She is recovering at a nearby hospital.

A 12-year-old girl also received medical treatment after being hit in the back with a bullet fragment that bounced off a wall in the mall, Ison said.

Two minutes after Sapirman opened fire, Dicken confronted him and fired 10 rounds at him from a distance. Sapirman tried to retreat to the bathroom to take cover, but was fatally injured and fell to the ground.

The motive for the shooting in the shopping center on Sunday is still unknown to police.

Police said Dicken, who was legally carrying the firearm, has no military background or police training, but has shown smart and brave instincts.

“His actions were nothing short of heroic,” Ison said. “He attacked the shooter from a considerable distance with a pistol, was very skilled at it, very tactically good and as he approached the suspect he also gestured for people to get out of behind him.”

Sapirman, who has no criminal record other than minor collisions by juveniles, fired 24 rounds from an AR-15 style rifle in the two minutes before he was knocked out.

“Many more people would have died last night if a responsible armed civilian had not acted very quickly,” Ison said.

Police found a second rifle, a handgun, several magazines and more than 100 ammunition that were on the shooter and stashed in the mall bathroom. Officers also found Sapirman’s cell phone, which he threw into a toilet in a bathroom cubicle.

Investigators later retrieved the gunman’s laptop from his apartment, which was in a high-temperature oven turned on next to a can of butane.

The FBI tries to recover data from both devices, which has been damaged by Sapirman’s actions.

Ison said there is no known motive at this time in the investigation.

Relatives of Sapirman told police he had no indications that he was violent or unstable.

The 20-year-old had legally purchased the rifle he used in the shooting in March and had regularly visited a nearby shooting range, family said.

The attack was the latest in a series of deadly mass shootings that have ravaged the US and cost the lives of countless Americans.

Mass shooters in recent months have targeted schools, churches, supermarkets, a Fourth of July parade and now a shopping center — leaving almost no place safe for those just going about their daily lives.
