Melbourne scale-up Envato once again flies the flag for Australian technology in the annual list of the world’s top marketplaces released by a16z, the fund of legendary Californian venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.
It is the 4th edition of a16z Marketplace 100and Envato, which remains privately owned, having been founded in 2006 in a Bondi garage by Collis and Cyan Ta’eed and Jun Rung made it every time.
The a16z list ranks the 100 largest consumer-focused market start-ups and private companies.
San Francisco grocery delivery service Instacart topped the list again, with Valve – the owner of game marketplace Steam – in second place, while the notorious and ethically questionable ticket seller, Viagogo, which is in violation of Australian authorities for ripping off customers, is currently facing charges Legal action at the Supreme Court in New Zealand is No. 3 on the list.
Envato Market iIt is the only Australian company on the list and one of only two of them the Asia Pacific region. US companies dominate 90% of the list, with only ten ranked marketplaces outside the US.
There were 34 new entries in the 2023 ranking, covering experience markets in food, travel and shopping reveal an emerging trend alongside work markets.
