  • Eight people have died and several others have been injured in a fire at an electric scooter showroom.
  • The fire reportedly started in the EV showroom and spread to a hotel above the showroom.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modic has announced compensation for the deceased and the injured.

In a tragic incident, a fire at an electric scooter showroom killed eight people and injured several others. The incident happened late last night and struck a hotel above the EV showroom.

While the fire reportedly started at the Ruby Electric Scooters showroom on the ground floor, it extended to the first and second floors of the Ruby Pride luxury hotel. The hotel reportedly had more than 25 guests at the time.

Eight people have been reported to have died from smoke suffocation. In addition, several people have reportedly been injured with burns and other injuries while trying to escape the fire.

While the cause of the fire has not yet been released, officials suspect the fire was caused by an electric scooter or generator placed in the Ruby Electric Scooters showroom.

“A fire broke out in the electric scooter charging unit on the ground floor, causing smoke to overwhelm the people staying on the first and second floors,” said Hyderabad Police Commissioner CV Anand.

Two fire trucks rushed to the scene to extinguish the fire. The fire service reportedly rescued seven people from the hotel that was trapped in the blaze. According to local residents, several people jumped out of the building to escape the fire.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed fear over the incident and announced compensation for the dead and injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

“Saddened by the loss of life due to a fire in Secunderabad, Telangana. Condolences to the relatives. May the injured recover quickly. €2 lakh from PMNRF would be paid to the next of kin of each deceased. €50,000 would be paid to the injured,” PMO India’s Twitter account quoted the prime minister as saying.

“It is a very unfortunate incident. Fire crews did their best to rescue people from the lodge, but some people were killed in the heavy smoke. Several others were rescued from the lodge. We are investigating how the incident could have happened,” said Telangana’s Home Secretary, Md. Mahmood Ali.

Not the first incident in an EV showroom

This is not the first fire incident in which an electric car has caught fire. There have been several EV fires in recent months, including an incident in Vijaywada in which a man was killed and his wife and daughter suffered severe burns.

The government had instructed the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) to investigate the fire incidents, and the agency discovered serious defects in the batteries.
