A family visiting from Mexico was involved in a head-on collision on a California highway that killed four people and injured six others, police said.
Two vehicles, which appeared to be a large SUV and a midsize sedan, crashed on Highway 12 in Rio Vista shortly after 8 p.m. Rex Hawkins told NBC News.
Both vehicles involved in the accident were killed, he said.
The four people who died were pronounced dead at the scene, while all six injured were taken to hospitals, the Rio Vista Fire Department, which responded to the incident, said in a statement.
While authorities have not released the names and ages of the dead or the circumstances of most of the injured, Rio Vista Police Chief Jon Mazer said. NBC Bay Area that one person did ‘fairly well’.
Rio Vista is more than 50 miles northeast of Oakland.
“Just being spoken to by that one person at the hospital, I know they were on a family vacation from Mexico,” he said. “The other car, I’d say it’s young people. I don’t know their ages, but I guess we’re looking at young twenty-somethings.”
The fire service warned that traffic in the area will be affected by the investigation into the accident.
It also said its service for non-emergency calls could be slightly delayed due to efforts to help transport patients to hospitals.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
