Danny Green’s 94th-minute goal consigned Welling United to a 2-1 defeat at Concord Rangers to bring a difficult National League South season to an end.

Late goals conceded have been a feature in recent weeks and they were again undone by a last-gasp one to bring down the curtain on their campaign.

Warren Feeney, their third manager this season, was brought in for the last 10 games with one target, to keep the Wings up, and he achieved his mission with a game to spare. That allowed him to release his loanees and give chances to squad players, including a league debut for Henry Burnett, the 45th player to represent the club in the league this season.

Chi Ezennolim opens the scoring for the Wings

Mason Saunders-Henry had a shot saved, and Ade Shokunbi’s effort was deflected over before a stretching Harvey Bradbury could not direct his header from Ben Wells’ corner on target.

Bradbury was almost able to divert a wayward Saunders-Henry shot home before Welling went ahead. Former Millwall left-back Chi Ezennolim was allowed to come in on to his weaker foot but it did not stop him from unleashing a shot that went in off the bar.

Alex Hernandez headed wide for Concord before Welling again went close when a Bradbury snapshot flew inches wide.

Ryley Scott almost levelled on the stroke of half time but his25-yard shot flew back out off the bar.

Ezennolim had a shot blocked and Bradbury hooked over after Concord goalkeeper Myles Roberts pushed an Aaron Barnes shot just behind him.

Scott hit a low free-kick harmlessly wide before Green fired straight at Welling goalkeeper Sam Jackson. Ben Williamson shot over on the turn before the hosts levelled with 12 minutes remaining. Lamar Reynolds fired in a cross that hit a Welling player on the arm and a spot kick was awarded. Ryan Blackman stepped up and sent Jackson the wrong way.

Reynolds again caused problems when set up by James Blanchfield however, his shot hit the outside of the post and went wide. He was also instrumental in Concord’s winner when given room to cross for an unmarked Green to head home.

There was enough time for Welling to launch one last free-kick into the area. Jackson went up and got on the end of Ezennolim’s free-kick but could not direct his header on target.

Danny Green, right, scores the winner

Having achieved his target of keeping Welling up, Feeney and the board will discuss ambitions for next season, and how they can be achieved.
