Ben and Karla, two of his siblings, both made it as actors, with Karla also taking on the role of musician. Fred Savage is said to have spent his formative years in the Illinois town of Glencoe before moving to California. He attended the elite Brentwood School, which is located in Los Angeles. He received an English degree from Stanford in 1999.
