Google is about to switch your Gmail interface to this new look

Google started rolling out an updated UI for Gmail in February that brings Meet, Chat, and Spaces closer and applies more of the Material You styling effects. From today it will be opt-out instead of opt-inso your account will default to the new view pretty soon.

It’s not a huge change, but as Google moves to its current best flavor of the week messaging app and weaves its Workspace suite into a better competitor to Office, it puts more emphasis on the updated experiences.

If you can’t see what’s different here, the updated UI gathers buttons for Mail, Meet, Spaces, and Chat in a single list at the top of the left bar instead of displaying multiple conversations of each in a list. They’re still easily accessible without having everything on the screen at once, and you can quickly jump into a section in a conversation as a list pops up when you mouse over the icon.

And if you only want one form of communication on the screen without the others (like Gmail), it’s a little easier to do that since Chat and the rest are no longer listed under your inboxes and labels.

According to Google, you can choose which apps are included there in the Quick Settings menu, where you can switch back to the old look if you want. Unlike the usual 15-day rollout for new features, Google says this is an “extensive rollout,” so while it’s coming to both Workspace and personal Gmail accounts, your interface may take longer than a few weeks to change. on his own. If you just want to give it a try, you should now be able to sign in (and out again) from the quick settings menu, as long as you’ve already switched to Chat from Hangouts and positioned Chat in the menu on the left.
