The breaks keep piling up.

Google is going on a two-week hiring break, The Information reported Wednesdayciting a leaked email from chief executive Prabhakar Raghavan.

“We will use this time to review our staffing needs and align ourselves with a new set of prioritized staffing requests over the next three months,” he reportedly wrote in the memo.

Raghavan also said the company wouldn’t take back any offers already in play, but it wouldn’t make any new ones for the next two weeks, the outlet added.

Last week, Google’s CEO warned employees it would curb hiring for the rest of the year and encouraged staff to be more “entrepreneurial.”

The tech industry had a profitable pandemic (Alphabet, Google’s parent company, employed 23,000 people from March 2021 to March 2022). But lately, things have soured, with Google and other social media and tech companies interrupting or delaying hiring.

On Tuesday, Wired reported that TikTok plans to rework operations and likely lay off people, the same day, Bloomberg reported Apple’s plans to slow hiring and spending in certain areas of the company. Twitter has also announced a staff freeze.

The National Bureau of Economic Research, a private non-profit organization, is the official arbiter of when the US is in a recession, and economists in Bloomberg’s monthly survey increased the likelihood of one coming, by CNBC. This comes after last week’s news that inflation has not slowed down.

“Google is reading the room and following the trend of other Big Tech players slowing hiring down to 2023 given the macro storm clouds,” Wedbush Securities tech analyst Daniel Ives said via text message.

“We consider this a prudent move,” he added. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
