HBO Max continues to remove content with 36 titles being retired this week, including 20 of its own productions. Other titles include HBO and Cartoon Network originals, along with a few acquired titles. The development first reported by Variety noted that this move was in line with the major HBO Max-Discovery+ merger due next year.
To prepare for the merger, the company quietly removed titles since several weeks. Earlier this month, Warner Bros. Discovery during its quarterly earnings call that HBO Max will begin showing Discovery+ reality shows from Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia Network beginning September 30.
“As we work to bring our content catalogs together under one platform, we will be making changes to the content offerings available on both HBO Max and discovery+. That includes removing certain content from both platforms,” the company said in a statement Variety. We’ve contacted HBO Max to find out when exactly these titles will be removed.
The company is likely to remove titles to cut costs and make way for newer titles in the combined service. While it’s just a money-saving tactic for the streaming giants, creatives are concerned that their hard work making shows will be wasted because of executive decisions.
Julia Pot, the creator of the “Summer Camp Island” animated show, said on Twitter that the creators didn’t have much information about the reasons behind this step. We’ve asked HBO Max to comment on its communications with the creators, and we’ll update the story if we hear anything.
