“Heartstopper” star Kit Connor came out on Monday as bisexual and said he felt compelled to share his sexual orientation after the actor was accused of queerbaiting by viewers of the hit Netflix show.
On a rare Twitter after, the British actor wrote: “Let’s go back. i’m bi. Congratulations for forcing an 18-year-old to challenge herself. I think some of you missed the point of the show. Bye.”
While Connor didn’t say exactly why he felt compelled to come out, his post came weeks after he said he “deleted Twitter” amid accusations of queerbaiting, or profiting from appearing as queer without explicitly claiming the community. That followed the emergence of photos of him holding hands with Maia Refico, his co-star in “A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow.”
“This is a dumb dumb app. bit bored now, delete twitter :),” Connor had said in the September report.
Alice Oseman, creator of “Heartstopper,” which she launched first as a webcomic and later as a graphic novel series, shared her support for Connor on Monday, write in reply on his tweet: “I really don’t understand how people can watch ‘Heartstopper’ and then happily spend their time speculating about sexuality and judging based on stereotypes.”
“I hope all those people are ashamed of being F***. Kit, you’re amazing,” Oseman wrote.
“I love your kit, I’m sorry this has been so disgustingly rough for you”, actor Kizzy Edgell, who plays Darcy Olsson on “Heartstopper,” said in a separate tweet. “[You’ve] treated so unfairly,” they wrote late Monday.
Fans also rushed to support Connor, with one Twitter user writing: “HOW can one watch a show like Heartstopper and the benefit is that you as a viewer/fan/whatever have the right to experience the most personal aspects of acting life. especially when it comes to this. All the love in the world to you Kit.”
“I’m so sorry you were literally forced to get out before you were ready. Not that you ever should have gotten out on your own,” wrote another. “People are really missing the whole point of this show and the web comics. We love you Kit, sorry you had to do this.”
