Becoming suddenly unemployed is a precarious position to be in, and not even a severance package can take the sting out of the self-confidence that a layoff brings.

The unprecedented tech layoffs that have occurred in recent weeks at companies like Meta and Stripe have sent shock waves through the industry as thousands of workers brace themselves for the task of finding a new role in a less thriving job market.

However, the sector as a whole remains stable. In fact, according to according to a Gartner reportIT spending is expected to grow 5.1% to reach $4.5 trillion by early 2023, meaning the picture is generally positive.

Mass layoffs are nothing personal (even if not handled very well by senior management or a new CEO) and are not a reflection of your skills, expertise or work ethic. So, instead of viewing your layoff as a negative, use it as an opportunity to reassess and reassess where you really want to go in your career.

You might consider moving to a fully remote role that gives you the flexibility you craved. Or you could think about a different direction in an emerging and growing sector such as AI, cybersecurity or cloud services.

Submit your CV once

A good way to keep your mind on the game is to update your current resume with your most recent accomplishments while they’re still fresh in your mind. However, don’t be tempted to fire off the same resume at multiple outlets that are currently hiring. Instead, take the time to tailor it to individual job specifications, paying close attention to keywords in the job description.

Not only will this help you make a good first impression—only 2% of the candidates applying for a position are selected to participate in an interview. It also helps you beat the automatic tracking system (ATS) bots that many companies now use to filter applications before they ever reach a hiring manager’s inbox.

Put yourself out there

If the past three years have taught us anything, it’s that face-to-face communication is key and face-to-face meetings always yield better results than virtual networks. Therefore, make use of your network and organize one-on-one meetings with your professional colleagues. While they may not be able to offer you a job, they may have valuable insights about other companies that are hiring, or can put you in touch with others in your industry.

Networking is also invaluable in another way: it helps to generate ideas and keep abreast of the latest developments in the industry. Networking events and conferences are a great way to stay connected with your professional community.

As with any kind of rejection in life, professional or otherwise, dusting yourself off and getting back in the proverbial saddle is the only way forward.

So if you’re ready to re-enter the job market and future-proof your career in 2023 and beyond, don’t forget to check out The House Of Talent Job Board, or have a look at the three roles below that are suitable for you to take on now.
