Nichelle Nichols began her theater career in 1961 with the musical Kicks and Co., followed by several more performances. In 1967 she appeared on the cover of Ebony magazine and traveled with the orchestras of Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton. Nichols made her television debut as a guest star on an episode of the NBC show The Lieutenant. She starred in movies like Doctor, Are You Kidding? and Truck Turner.
In addition to Futurama, Gargoyles, Batman: The Animated Series, The Simpsons and others, the pioneering actress played roles in several television shows.
