Apple has had support for eSIM since the iPhone Xs/XR, but this year it’s going all in by ditching the physical SIM card slot for all iPhone 14 versions sold in the US, while models sold in other countries will have support for both physical and virtual SIM card, Apple could eventually remove the SIM card in more countries depending on availability. The exact instructions vary from region to region. For this guide, we focused primarily on the US market.

eSIM is a replacement for a physical SIM card built into the phone’s circuitry so that users can easily switch between SIM cards. It also allows people to host more than two SIM cards. The iPhone 14 can host up to eight SIM cards instantly. So, how easy is it to load a new eSIM on iPhone? It only needs to take a few steps.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Go to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan. Alternatively, this setting can be Settings > Mobile data > Add eSIM.
  • You will see a number of numbers on the display to transfer the plan. Otherwise, you can manually select the “Transfer from Nearby iPhone” option. Both iPhones must be on iOS 16 for this to work.
  • Instructions on the old model will help you in this process. Enter the verification code – which will be displayed on the new iPhone – on the older iPhone.
  • Once you’ve transferred the plan to the newer iPhone, your carrier will send you a notification to complete the setup.

QR Code Support

  • If your carrier has provided you with a QR code, you can simply select “Use QR code” while setting up the new iPhone or using the camera.
  • In some regions, you can find “Use QR code” option under Settings > Mobile data > Add eSIM.

Convert physical SIM card

Some carriers may support converting the physical SIM to eSIM quickly without having to visit a store. For that, you can go to Settings > Cellular and select Convert to eSIM and then tap Convert Cellular Plan. After confirming the mobile plan you want to hide, tap Convert to eSIM and wait for it to activate.

Some US-based airlines have their: own apps and sites to easily set up eSIM. Notably, most iPhone models need to be connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi when switching to eSIM, but only eSIM iPhone 14 sold in the US can be activated without an Internet connection to Wi-Fi.
