Both Red Bull cars pulled up with fuel issues in the final laps, allowing Lewis Hamilton to sneak into third place in his otherwise underwhelming Mercedes.

It is Verstappen’s team-mate Sergio Perez who starts from top spot in Jeddah, having pipped Leclerc to his first career pole for what will be his 216th race.

Carlos Sainz is third for Ferrari, with Verstappen only fourth ahead of Esteban Ocon, George Russell, Fernando Alonso, Valtteri Bottas, Pierre Gasly and Kevin Magnussen.

Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, is all the way down in 16th place after being eliminated in Q1 for the first time since the Brazilian Grand Prix of 2017.

Mick Schumacher won’t race for Haas after being taken to hospital in the aftermath of a scary high-speed crash during qualifying.
