An American coming-of-age drama series based on Walter Tevis’ 1983 novel, The The Queen’s Gambit, will premiere on Netflix in 2020. “Queen’s Gambit” is the name given to a chess opening. Scott Frank, who co-created the series with Allan Scott, who owns the rights to the book, wrote and directed it. Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) is a fictional chess prodigy who climbs to the top of the chess world in the mid-1950s and early 1960s while dealing with drug and alcohol dependence.
On October 23, 2020, Netflix launched The Queen’s Gambit. This was Netflix’s most-watched scripted miniseries in 63 countries in just four weeks. The critical acclaim for the show focused on Joy’s Taylor performance, as well as the show’s cinematography and production values, all of which were highly acclaimed. Chess prodigy Elizabeth Harmon’s life is chronicled in The Queen’s Gambit as she attempts to become an elite chess player while grappling with emotional issues and drug and alcohol abuse. After losing her mother in a car accident, eight-year-old Beth is sent to an orphanage in Lexington, Kentucky, where the building’s caretaker, Mr. Shaibel, gives her chess lesson. The orphanage gives the girls daily tranquilizers to “balance their disposition,” as was the custom at the time, and this becomes an addiction for Beth. Her ability to visualize moves helps her improve quickly as a chess player. A few years later, Beth is adopted by Alma and Allston Wheatley, a childless suburban couple. Alma initially dislikes Beth’s passion for chess, but once Beth wins her first tournament, Alma is completely on board with her daughter’s chess journeys. Harry Beltik, Benny Watts and DL Townes are just some of the people she develops close relationships with during her stay in Kentucky.
Because of the financial rewards that come with her international chess success, Beth’s drug and alcohol addiction escalates. Jolene, with whom she grew up in the orphanage, helps her prepare for her biggest challenge yet, a major international chess tournament in Moscow against the world’s best players.
