I Am Legend star Smith has said his behaviour was “inexcusable” after he stormed the stage and slapped Rock at the awards ceremony because the comedian made a quip about his wife’s hairstyle.

Now the actress, who has openly discussed her hair loss due to alopecia, has broken her silence to say is a time for “healing” in an Instagram post on Tuesday.

She posted the quote: “This is a season for healing and I’m here for it.”

There has been an outpouring of outrage and Hollywood stars watched on in horror as Smith struck Rock at the Oscars because he made a joke about his wife.

In reference to her hair, Rock joked: “Jada, can’t wait for GI Jane 2.”

Smith shouted at him: “Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth.”

Later, the tearful star said in his best actor acceptance speech: “Love will make you do crazy things.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Smith said he was “wrong” and “embarrassed” by how he had behaved at the Academy Awards.

In a lengthy message, he wrote: “Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.

“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.

“I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us. I am a work in progress.”
