The lawyer who represented murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi has been sentenced to three years in prison by the United Arab Emirates for tax evasion, CNN reports. Asim Ghafoor, a US citizen, was convicted of taxation and money laundering by the Abu Dhabi Money Laundering Court and fined him three million dirhams, or nearly $817,000. Ghafoor has been pursued by both the UAE and the US for tax evasion, according to state media, and after Ghafoor serves his sentence, the country plans to extradite him to the US. Ghafoor was taken into custody by officials from Dubai International Airport on Friday. “We have expressed our expectation that Mr Ghafoor’s rights to fair and public treatment and due process will be fully respected and that he will be treated humanely, as well as that US consular access rights are fully respected,” a spokesperson said. of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. told CNN. The verdict came after a week in which President Joe Biden was given flak for exchanging a punch with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who, according to US intelligence, ordered the assassination of Khashoggi.
