A new study measuring the performance of mobile networks in the US points to an increase in network problems, with slow performance or the inability to load content being the most common complaints. that is according to research agency JD Powerwhich attributes the drop in network quality to increased usage.

JD Power conducted the survey from January to June 2022, ranking each cellular provider based on the number of issues per 100 connections. The results consistently show that Verizon is the carrier with the least number of issues, with AT&T beating only Verizon in the Southwest and tying with the company in the Northeast. Meanwhile, T-Mobile was trailing the two carriers in every region in the US.

The problems have apparently abated in areas where 5G is available, which follows with a previous study conducted by JD Power from July to December 2021 that discovered a wider rollout of 5G helped reduce network problems. During this time, the average for network issues per 100 devices in the region hovered at nine in most areas and only rose to 10 and 11 in the Southeast and Southwest. In this most recent study, region averages jumped to 10 for most of the country and to 11 and 12 in both the Southeast and Southwest.

“An increase in the use of wireless devices and devices was bound to catch up with network quality,” said Ian Greenblatt, general manager at JD Power. “While the number of issues is significantly lower when 5G is available, the most influential issues on network quality ratings continue to be streaming audio and video quality, slow load times, and call dropouts.”

While T-Mobile had the most recorded issues in both surveys, the company is leading the way when it comes to 5G coverage. T-Mobile extended its mid-band 5G spectrum years ahead of AT&T and Verizon, which still haven’t fully enabled their respective C-band networks due to an ongoing feud with the Federal Aviation Administration.
