Dirk was raised in Würzburg by his father Jorg-Werner who played handball for the German national team, and his mother Helga Bredenbrocker who was also a basketball player. Dirk has an older sister named Silke who competed in athletics before becoming a basketball player. He started playing tennis and handball in primary school, but after being motivated by his parents and teachers he switched to basketball, partly because he grew to 2.13m. Dirk was 15 when he started playing for the local team DJK Würzburg, and was then noticed by the famous coach Holger Geschwidner who offered to teach him 2-3 times a week.
He joined the Dallas Mavericks in 1998, but was first chosen by the Milwaukee Bucks, who soon traded him to the Mavericks. The first season was bad for Dirk, as Mavericks lost 31 out of 50 games. In 1999, the Mavericks were bought by Mark Cuban for $280 million and Mark invested in the team improving their results, and in 2000 they reached the playoffs for the first time in a decade. Dirk became the second highest paid German athlete, right behind Michael Schumacher, a former motorcycle racing world champion. Dirk stayed with the Mavericks until after the 2018-2019 season when he retired.
Dirk’s sister Silke described him as ‘a confident but restrained character, unspoiled by money and fame.
