Early life, education, family

Lauren Elizabeth Lopez was born on March 8, 1986 in Royal Oak, Michigan, USA; she has a younger brother with whom she is very close. As kids, they played a game called “hamming,” which basically means buying slices of ham, throwing them at trees and windows to see if the slices stick. She was raised by a Jewish mother and a Mexican father. As a child she loved to dance and at the age of three she started competitive dancing.

During high school, her mother insisted that she try acting, so she participated in school musicals and plays. The turning point in her future education was the play “Medea” with Fiona Shaw, when Lauren decided what her future profession would be.

After high school, she continued her education at the University of Michigan, where she graduated with honors in theater arts. Later Lauren took improv theater classes in Chicago with iO and The Second City, and with Groundlings in Los Angeles, California.
