The man accused of fatally shooting a 21-year-old woman who was the designated driver for her friends at a Philadelphia bar has been arrested in Atlantic City after a week-long manhunt.

Anthony Nelson, 47, was detained by US Marshalls at Harrah’s Casino on Wednesday, abc6 reported. He is now charged with murder as a result of the fatal shooting of Jailene Holton on June 28.

“Our community has been deeply affected by the most appalling and senseless loss of Jailene, who held such great promise for a great future. We hope the swift arrest of this horrific perpetrator will bring some comfort to the Holton family,” authorities said.

Robert Clark, the supervisor of the US Marshals Fugitive Task Force, said the agency was developing a lead that helped agents trace Nelson to New Jersey.

“Once he realized we were there and weren’t going to leave, we were able to get him safely into custody without anyone getting hurt,” Clark said. “We do believe he knew he was wanted.”

Jailene Hotlon, 21, was fatally shot in the head while hanging out with friends.
Police said Nelson opened fire at Phily Bar and Restaurant (pictured) after being evicted from the establishment for causing a nuisance.

He added: “Many of our task force researchers have children. This was an unnecessary arbitrary act of violence. It’s a horrific act and we’re just really thankful that we were able to get in and get him into custody in less than 12 hours.”

Nelson is accused of opening fire at Philly Bar and Grill after being evicted from the establishment for causing a nuisance while using a pool table.

Police said Nelson took a gun from a pickup truck and fired 15 shots into the bar from 200 yards away.

Five of the shots went through the bar’s windshield.

Holton, standing in the back, was hit in the head by a stray bullet and collapsed in front of her friends. She later died in a hospital.

Another patron was injured by broken glass and was treated for cuts.

After the shooting, police said Nelson fled in a pickup truck with two other men who were with him that night.

Holton’s uncle, James Holton, said at the time that the woman acted as a designated driver for her companions.

Relatives said Holton did not go out often and was the designated driver for her friends the night of her death.

“She didn’t go out often,” the uncle told the station. “They would only be there for about 15 to 20 minutes, and then the altercation broke out and… this guy started shooting.”

Nelson faces extradition from New Jersey to Pennsylvania to face several charges, including murder and a fugitive from justice.

It is unclear at this time whether Nelson’s two companions will face charges in connection with the shooting.
