Microsoft has recognized an issue where Outlook on Windows stops responding or crashes when viewing Uber receipt emails. The issue recently started in what Microsoft calls the current channel version of Outlook available to Microsoft 365 subscribers. Microsoft is developing a fix, but it won’t be available until Patch Tuesday on August 9.
In a support note, spotted by BleepingComputer, Microsoft explains that opening, replying, or forwarding an Uber receipt is causing this issue. Uber uses “complex tables” in its emails, and it seems that Microsoft Word, which Outlook uses to view emails, is struggling to display these tables.
“The Word team has implemented a fix that will soon be released on the beta channel for fix verification,” explains Microsoft. “We are currently estimating that the solution will go to Current Channel production on patch Tuesday, August 9, 2022.”
IT admins can use a workaround to resolve the issue, reverting to an earlier version of Office that works fine with Uber emails. That suggests the issue was introduced by an Office update rather than a change to Uber emails. Anyway, the problem should be fixed next Tuesday.
