The Kerala Cooperative Milk Marketing Federationor Milmaon Thursday announced its decision to raise milk prices by Rs 6 per litre, which will take effect on December 1.

Currently, the cost of a liter of milk in the state is Rs 46.

The price hike comes three years after Milma announced a Rs 4 per liter increase in 2019.

“That time, 83.75 per cent (Rs 3.35) of the additional amount went to the farmers. That share will continue this time, meaning Rs 5,025 of the Rs 6 will go to the farmer,” said Federation President, KS mani.

The latest decision comes after a Milma-appointed panel of experts from the state’s veterinary and agricultural universities conducted an investigation into dairy farmers’ expenses.

In its interim report submitted last week, the commission said the farmers are suffering an estimated loss of Rs 8.57 per liter of milk.

Subsequently, Milma’s board of directors called a meeting and felt that a price increase was inevitable, the chairman said.

“While Milma is authorized to raise the price, the board’s decision has been discussed with the state government and an appropriate increase has been finalized,” he added.

Along with another increase in purchase prices, the dairy cooperatives and distributors will each receive 5.75 percent of the new increased amount, while 0.75 percent of the amount will go to the Dairy Farmers Welfare Fund Board.

Milma will receive 3.50 percent of the increased amount, even though 0.50 percent has been reserved for the Plastic Disposal Fund.

In addition to the increase in the milk purchase prices of the cooperative federation, the government gives various subsidies to the farmers.

The current increase in the purchase price of milk will benefit milk producers and encourage more of them to join the dairy sector, Mani said.

Founded in 1980, Milma is a state-owned cooperative company headquartered in Thiruvananthapuram.
