Elneny’s previous deal had been due to expire at the end of this season and he has now agreed terms on a one-year extension, with the option for a further 12 months.

The midfielder, who has been at Arsenal since 2016, had been clear in his desire to stay at Emirates Stadium and negotiations were concluded swiftly last week.

Arsenal confirmed the deal on Wednesday morning, with Elneny delighted to continue working under Mikel Arteta.

“I love this club and I feel like part of this family,” he told Arsenal Media. “I want to continue at this amazing club and amazing family and I’m very happy and very excited for the future.”

Clubs in Turkey, where Elneny spent a season on loan in 2019-20, had shown an interest in the Egyptian but his first option had always been to stay at Arsenal.

Manager Arteta said: “Mo is a really important part of the team. He brings endless energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the team and is loved by everyone. He’s an important player for us on and off the pitch, a real role model to our younger players and I’m delighted he’s staying.”

Regardless of Elneny staying, Arsenal want to sign a midfielder this summer and Youri Tielemans is emerging as their top target.

The Belgian has just one year left on his contract at Leicester and has so far refused to pen an extension.

That is forcing the Foxes to consider offers and Arsenal are one of the clubs keen to sign Tielemans this summer.

The Gunners have been tracking Tielemans since January and, while they have been told the 25-year-old is keen to play in the Champions League, they remain in the race for his signature.
