An explosion on a popular pedestrian street in the Turkish city of Istanbul has injured several people, a senior official said on Sunday.
Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya tweeted that the blast “occurred on Taksim Istiklal Street,” a busy thoroughfare lined with shops and restaurants, at approximately 4:20 p.m. local time (8:20 a.m. ET).
“There are casualties and injuries,” he said, adding that emergency services had been dispatched to the scene.
It was not clear what caused the explosion.
