“The actions of the civilians and the captain saved lives,” the department said.
But the flames continued to rage and spread to several other buildings, with “extensive fires” developing in at least two of the buildings, despite firefighters’ efforts to contain the blaze, the fire service said.
“The fire could not be confined to the affected building and has spread to several surrounding buildings,” the department said in its press release. “The damage to the structures involved is extensive and some of the buildings are a total loss.”
No injuries were reported to civilians, but two firefighters were transported from the crime scene due to possible heat exhaustion and a third due to back injuries, the department said.
The 18-room boutique hotel, according to the site, offers a “unique blend of sophisticated flair and laid-back luxury” overlooking the harbor.
