Netflix announced today that the live-action “Gears of War” movie will be written by Jon Spaihts, known for his work on “Doctor Strange” and “Dune.”
“Gears of War is one of the best action games of all time, with vibrant characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that highlights the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squad mates. It wants to be cinema and I am very happy to have the opportunity to make that happen,” Spaihts said in a statement.
The news that Netflix brought on Jon Spaihts to write the script was first reported by Variety.
“Gears of War” is a popular video game franchise with more than 40 million copies sold. The first game was released exclusively for Xbox 360 in 2006. “Gears of War” is set on the planet Sera, where the Locust Horde, subterranean reptilian humanoid creatures, threaten humanity.
Netflix’s live-action movie explores the story of Delta Squad, a team of infantrymen led by Sergeant Marcus Fenix, who must defeat the Locusts to save humans from extinction.
It’s probably a relief to many gamers that a “Gears of War” movie is finally coming. Multiple attempts have been made to adapt the film. For example, in 2007 New Line Cinema temporarily had the rights, and Universal enlisted “Collide” writer F. Scott Frazier to adapt the game in 2018, but neither company pulled it off.
November 2022, Netflix entered into a partnership with The Coalition, the developer behind the game. In addition to the film, Netflix is also going to make an animated series for adults. The streamer said there is also potential for more stories.
“We are thrilled to be working with Jon and the Netflix team to bring Gears of War to life,” The Coalition added. “Jon is a master storyteller with a knack for creating epic sci-fi universes and he really loves Gears of War. We couldn’t wish for a better partner to honor our franchise and tell an authentic story to our fans.”
