Tropical Storm Nicole reached hurricane strength on Wednesday as it made landfall on Grand Bahama Island en route to Florida’s Atlantic coast and the southeastern U.S.

It is expected to make landfall in Florida early Thursday, the National Hurricane Center said in a 1:00 am update.

The storm is expected to move toward Georgia and the Carolinas later Thursday and Friday. A lot of rain is expected throughout the region.

Florida, where evacuations had been ordered, expects a storm surge that could further erode many beaches hit by Hurricane Ian in September.

President Joe Biden approved federal relief for 45 counties, including Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, Pinellas, Broward, Flagler and Seminole.

Nicole is the third hurricane to hit the Atlantic this month, leveling the 2001 season for most Atlantic hurricanes in November. according to Phil Klotzbach, an atmospheric science researcher at Colorado State University.

When it made landfall on Grand Bahama Island Wednesday night, Nicole had maximum winds of 75 mph, making it a Category 1 hurricane.

Thursday, according to the hurricane center, it was about 30 miles from Fort Pierce, Florida, and traveling at 25 miles per hour to the northwest.

Flights at several airports were canceled prior to the storm’s arrival. Palm Beach International Airport all flights stopped Wednesday morning, while Orlando International Airport said it stopped all commercial activities at 4pm. In Daytona Beach, the airport closed at 12:30 a.m. and plans to reopen Friday morning.

Meanwhile, airports in Miami, Tampa and Jacksonville remain open, but they warned travelers to check with their airlines about possible flight delays or cancellations.

More than 500 members of the Florida National Guard have been activated to assist in the response.

“These forces are actively preparing the entire state, but will remain flexible to reposition as needed to ensure a rapid response,” the agency said. “Our armed forces are prepared to perform a variety of missions, including bridge entrance checkpoints, traffic control points, search and rescue, security and installation of Tiger Dam systems.”

In preparation for the storm, Walt Disney World Resort theme parks would have a “phased closurebegins at 5 p.m. Wednesday and will remain closed through Thursday morning. Guests staying at Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground and Saratoga Springs Resort’s Treehouse Villas must also leave, the park said, saying it will help people find of alternative accommodations.

The hurricane center warned the entire state to be prepared for severe weather.

“Don’t focus on Nicole’s exact track as it is expected to be a major storm with hazards extending far north of the center, beyond the predicted cone,” it said in a “key messages” bulletin.

“These hazards are likely to affect much of the Florida peninsula and parts of the southeastern United States,” it said.

Hurricane warnings were in effect overnight for much of the state’s eastern coast — from Boca Raton, north of Miami, to the Flagler County line, north of Daytona Beach — forecasters said.

In an update Wednesday, Flagler County Emergency Management said: evacuation orders for the barrier islands enter at 3.30 pm

Other warnings are urging residents to prepare and evacuate if necessary as life-threatening conditions were en route, including hurricane-force winds of 74 mph or more, storm surges and coastal flooding.

“Preparations to protect life and property must be completed urgently,” the hurricane center said in a public advisory.

A storm surge warning, predicting dangerously high ocean, wetland and river waters, was in effect from North Palm Beach, Florida, to Altamaha Sound, Georgia, it said.

Forecasters said central and northern Florida could expect 3 to 5 inches of rain, with 8 inches possible.

Storm surge is likely to affect a long stretch of coastline, from Florida’s east coast to the southeastern US, the Hurricane Center said.

“This swell is likely to create life-threatening surf and current conditions,” it said.
