The new 6th Street Bridge remains in controversy as the Los Angeles Police Department had to close the bridge for the third straight night on Sunday.
The LAPD tweeted around 7:20 pm that the bridge would be closed due to what was termed “dubious activity”.
It is the third time in as many days that the bridge has been closed due to illegal activities.
The first closure was the result of a traffic accident, police said. A pickup truck parked in a non-parking zone was hit by another vehicle. The lane was closed again on Saturday due to illegal activities and disturbances by people who were seeking social media attention, according to police.
The $588 million bridge connecting Boyle Heights to downtown LA has been plagued by street takeovers, drag races and climbers since it opened to the public earlier this month. Last week, an explosive device was hurled at a KTLA reporter during a live coverage of a recent shutdown.
City councilors have called for more patrols on the bridge, and some residents have berated their neighbors for a lack of “citizen pride” for the architectural marvel.
Police have vowed to take a more proactive role in reducing crime and a fence was placed around part of the bridge on Saturday in an effort to deter climbers.
Video from Sky5 appeared to show that the bridge was only closed to car traffic from 8pm
It is unclear why the bridge was closed Sunday evening and how long it would be closed.
